What it is

Small samples of prostate tissue are taken through the perineum (the skin behind the scrotum), guided by your MRI scan. Because the needle does not pass through the back passage, the risk of infection is very low.

Men with a raised or rising PSA

An MRI showing an area that needs a closer look

Men on active monitoring who need a repeat biopsy

What happens on the day

Rest; a little bruising is normal.

Risks

Blood in the urine or semen for a few weeks, bruising, and, rarely, difficulty passing urine. Mr Pang will talk through the risks with you before you decide.
